about

Well - it finally happened. For the first time in our lives, a constitutionally protected right was rolled back.

I don’t need to rattle off the million ways in which this is bad. How it’s dehumanizing to women. How it’s going to lead to untold misery and crime. How it will lead to abuse and neglect.

Simply put - this is the most regressive political act of my lifetime.

There isn’t much I can add here that someone else hasn’t said. Writing this song was a personal exercise for me to do something with the feeling of abject frustration and helplessness that I felt in the wake of this decision. I was raised in the wild by women, and most of my dearest, closest friends and confidants are women, and even as such I can only begin to marginally understand how painful this must be. How demeaning and downright abusive it is. You would be well within your right to burn this entire country to the goddamn ground right now. (BTW my dear (badass) friend Alexandra Jacobs had the best line on this when someone posted “I don’t understand how you are resisting the urge to burn this all down right now” - she replied “Practice.”)

But now it’s time to engage. Of course there’s November’s elections - but this moment will require more than just voting from all of us, and it will require more than just getting elected to our pro-choice officials.

If you are feeling the pain from this - take a moment to feel it. Honor it, and then, ask yourself what, if anything do you want to do with it? There’s a hundred different ways to engage with this fight, one of which is probably just right for you, including not fucking fighting at all. We’re all fucking EXHAUSTED from the last 6 years, so I get it.

For me personally, my gut is this starts with person to person mutual aid networks. Because this is a state to state issue, the suffering for this will not be evenly applied. Look to help your red state friends at a personal level. Maybe it’s helping with transportation costs, maybe its just being a good listener for someone who needs someone to talk this through with. Maybe it’s helping with a place to stay should they ned to cross state lines. Mutual aid networks proved to be one of the most effective tools we had navigating the financial impact of the pandemic for folks who were disproportionately affected, which just as it is in this case, are lower income people.

Make no mistake about it - this is just the beginning. They are coming for contraception and gay marriage next, and you can absolutely take it to the bank that if the republicans seize control of congress in November - the very first order of business will be to make a national ban on abortion and they won’t waste a second getting rid of the filibuster to do if they need to in order to do it.

My love goes out to all of you. I’m here if you need me. Let’s look out for each other. If they want a fight - let’s give them one.

lyrics

LYRICS:

Well you woke up to see that
Six goons in a robe
Decided your body aint your own

When they talk about freedom
They mean theirs alone
To butt in to what you do at home
That ain’t nobody else’s business but your own

Yeah they talk about freedom
Like its a battleground
We could lift it all up or
We can burn it all down

Have you had yourself enough of
Getting pushed around
The shouting drowning out your voice

Getting burned at the back end
Or getting burned at the stake
By all these knock kneed mama’s boys
That are too chicken shit to leave you with the choice
