about

A veritable right of passage for every generation approaching the apex of middle age is to bitch about how the new music just wasn't as good as the music you liked when you were young and getting on some middle-aged person's nerves.

But instead of yelling at these kids to get off your lawn - what if we are the generation that invites everyone to the yard, not just for milkshakes, but good old fashioned loud guitar music, like we used to play for each other in bars with sticky floors with all the walls covered in the stickers of hundreds of bands that crisis crossed the country in rattle trap vans, each playing their part in a pony express of culture we made for each other when there was no internet to deliver it to us less labor-intensive ways.

As a card-carrying member of Generation X, I can say we have been more than happy to be largely ignored by capitalism and, quite frankly, everything else. We figured out this was a sucker's game almost 30 years ago. But what I miss was how we made our own art and music by hand for each other, so we didn't have to rely on a corporate machine to sell us back their shitty misunderstanding of what we thought was cool.

It's in that spirit I bring you this song, and while it would be more fun to have pulled up to your favorite neighborhood dive bar with a tiny stage in an '83 Dodge Tradesman van with a couple of other freaks and played it for ya on a school night - this will do for now.

lyrics

LYRICS:

They say that youth is wasted on the young
Let’s waste ours on
Middle Age

Living in the shadow of the bomb
Now it’s written on
The yellow pages

The only Elvis that we ever knew
Played us "This Year's Model"
And came from the UK

Can I take you to a show
That happens in a bar?
Everyone’s dressed like a scarecrow
And bands still play guitars

Remember when you used to drink out loud
And we’d all put out
For a mix tape
No one wants to hear you carry on
About your favorite song and your last fuckable day

I guess there ain’t no point in hanging on
To something that you barely had anyway
